The article analyzes the short stories Confession of Sophia Oksamytna and Mirror Fornication from the collection Artemis with a Fallow Deer by Lyudmila Taran in order to identify features of the artistic realization of the problem of national identity. As a result of research conducted using comparative, semiotic methods, semantic, contextual and asocial analysis of the text, and microanalysis of the text, it was found that the problem of national identity in L. Taran's short stories is revealed through the prism of the main characters'
worldview. The author uses various techniques: sleep, mirrors; uses a number of images-symbols, key amongst which are the images of the Siamese twins, the mirror maze, lizards; emphasizes the artistic details of the lack of roads, doors, faces and outlines the semantic oppositions 'I - other', 'own - someone else’s', which allows her to model the psychological space of the heroines and deeply comprehend the problem.
